Q. Tell us about Mac’s Backs-Books. What do you offer? What makes your store unique?
A. We have three floors of new & used books and magazines and various stationery products. We host numerous author and book events throughout the year. We have hosted a monthly poetry reading series since 1984, one of the longest running series in the country.
In addition to selling books, we have a book exchange program. Therefore, the books in the store reflect the taste and reading habits of the community. Customers also like to browse the magazine section which has a good selection of current events, art, music, food, culture, environment and kids journals. Customers can visit our website to order books to be mailed or for store pick-up. You can even order ebooks through the Kobo link.
Q. Why Coventry?
A. We chose Coventry because of it’s active street life and cultural diversity.
Q. Mac’s Backs-Books has a loyal customer base and an impressive longevity as an indie bookseller. What do you attribute that to?
A. Mac’s philosophy is to provide good books in a friendly atmosphere. We strive for excellent customer service. We believe that bookstores are cultural outposts, a place for people to be stimulated, educated and entertained. Neighborhood bookstores are so diverse and different from each other because of the dynamic synergy between the store, staff and customers. Bookstores reflect not only the tastes and attitudes of the owners but also the taste and attitudes of the neighborhood.
Our conversations with customers about books are the lifeblood of our store. We love when customers browse the stacks (which sometimes overflow onto stacks on the floor) and we love to recommend good reads.
Q. Share with us a few suggestions for unique gifts that holiday shoppers can find at Mac’s Backs-Books.
A. We have three floors of books, there’s something for everyone on your shopping list! Holiday 2014 staff favorites include: the new Derf comic, Best of Belt, and Yes Please by Amy Poehler! Lots of Cleveland books. Also, we carry beautiful and charming holiday boxed cards, eclectic calendars, CLE tote bags, Cleveland cards and postcards.
Q. We hear you’re having a big event this Saturday. Can you tell us about it?
A. Indies First is a national grassroots movement started in 2013 by Sherman Alexie to encourage authors to support their local independent bookstores the Saturday following Thanksgiving. During Indies First celebration, we’ll have a special guest author, every hour from 10 AM to 6 PM. They’ll talk about their latest book and recommend favorite reads to customers. A full list of the wonderful authors participating in our Indies First event can be found here.
Stop in to say hi, check out these author’s works, find out what they like to read, and help yourself to some holiday cookies and cheer!
We’re also participating in Small Business Saturday (also this Saturday, November 29th.) American Express® Card Members can register to get up to $30 back when they shop at Mac’s Backs-Books and other participating local spots on Small Business Saturday®.
Q. Any other upcoming Mac’s events that readers should put on their calendar?
A. A full schedule is always on our website but a few that come to mind are Joyce Brabner and Mark Zingarelli will be here to discuss their new graphic novel, Second Avenue Caper: When Goodfellas, Divas and Dealers Plotted Against the Plague on Saturday, December 6th at 6 PM. Barney and Laura Taxel will be here during the Coventry Village Holiday Festival on Saturday, Dec. 13th from 1-2 to sign their photography book, The Lakeview Cemetery. We’re also hosting a free kids holiday craft area that same day, from 11 AM to 1 PM.
Thanks to Suzanne for taking the time to share with us. Check back here tomorrow or become a fan of our Facebook page right now. Each weekday this holiday season, we’re introducing you to the independent business owners that help make Coventry Village a great place to live, work, shop, dine and play.
