Q. Tell us about the Grog Shop and the B Side Liquor Lounge & Arcade!
A. Grog Shop is the best place in town to see original music. Small, intimate space with a friendly staff, superb beer list, and exceptional sound. You can see some of the best up and coming bands here first (Bruno Mars / Oasis / Fall out Boy / FUN / Fitz and the Tantrums) or classics from way back (Dick Dale / The Church / Guided by Voices / Built to Spill / Johnny Marr.)
The B Side is a unique lounge space that has hosted some of the best cutting edge djs over the years (Diplo / Quest Love.) We have re-branded as a retro arcade featuring over 20 games including, 8 pinball, skeeball, beer pong, burger time, teenage mutant ninja turtle, and Street Fighter 2. It’s a great spot to host parties or special events. Come hang out, play the games, have a quality cocktail and enjoy the beats from some of the best local djs.
Q. Share a fun Grog Shop memory.
A. There are so many fun memories that I have from over the years at the Grog. There are countless crazy times with amazing people and bands that have become like family. I cant remember half of them, but I know they were good ones!
Q. What are the perks and the worst parts of owning your own business?
A. The biggest perk of being an entrepreneur is that you can make your own hours and rules. You don’t have to punch a clock or listen to people tell you what to do and how to do it. The worst part of being an entrepreneur is there are no set hours. It really means you are working 24/7 and you only have yourself to blame!
Q. Which members of your team have been with you the longest?
A. Terry Tish has been on my staff the longest. He has the grueling job of cleaning the club, which he does daily and mostly with a smile on his face. John Neely and Marty Egeland are close seconds. You will find them behind the bar, serving you drinks.
Q. What are some of your favorite spots to shop local?
A. I shop small in every aspect. Some of my favorite stores are Blush Boutique, Pink Pineapple, Evie Lou, Knuth, Banyon Tree, Avalon Exchange, Attenson’s Antiques, Macs Backs, Ten thousand Villages, all the antique spots on Larchmere (I really like to shop!)
I also dine out a lot and frequent mostly owned and operated spots such as Tav Co, Fire, Michaelangelo’s, Anatolia, Colony, Lopez, Sweet Melissa’s, Luna, Stone Oven, Nightown…the list goes on!!
Q. Give a few gift suggestions that holiday shoppers can get at the Grog Shop and B Side Liquor Lounge & Arcade?
A. Grog Shop shirts and hoodies are always a favorite. We have kids sizes too! Gift certificates for tickets or a night at the B Side are also nice stocking stuffers.
Thanks to Kathy for taking the time to share with us. There’s always great line up of live music and events at the Grog Shop. If you’re attending the Coventry Village Holiday Festival this weekend, make sure to stop by the Grog Shop for a great show — The Lighthouse and the Whaler / Summerays / Roger Harvey and the Wild Life.
Check back here Monday or become a fan of our Facebook page right now. Each weekday this holiday season, we’re introducing you to the independent business owners that help make Coventry Village a great place to live, work, shop, dine and play.
