Today is a good day to visit Coventry Village.

Cancelled – Live Music Saturdays – Family Dollar

Saturday | 1:00 PM–3:00 PM

Coventry Summer Series Live Music Schedule: Please note -- This event has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with the performers.
8-Aug The Family Dollar (Funk, Soul, Rock)

Location: Coventry Outdoor Courtyard. (Corner of Euclid Hts. Blvd. / Coventry Rd)
Time: 1-3 PM Inspired by a performance from soul singer Charles Bradley, writer/musician/entrepreneur R.A. Washington decided he was going to build the band of his dreams -- a band in the tradition of such labels as Stax and Motown. R.A. (better known as Rafeeq) took time during Bradley’s performance and contacted a group of experienced musicians from various corners of Cleveland’s rock, jazz, and latin music scenes. “I was crying during the set, and thought, ‘I’m going to do this’. So I texted those guys right then and there.” The Family Dollar currently features Rafeeq, rockers Lawrence Daniel Caswell (This Moment In Black History), Joe Wheelock (We The People), Edward Ángel Sotelo (Jack Fords, Cobra Verde), and drummer / percussionist Neil Chastain (kokolo and boogaloo destroyers from nyc.) A rotating all-star horn section often features trumpeter Jake Wynne and sax man Dan Wenninger (both in Revolution Brass Band) and trombonist/percussionist Byron Lee. The end result is a band built on traditional soul music, but transformed by influences as avant-garde jazz and Cleveland’s long, home-brewed tradition of irreverent underground rock. The band alternately moans and howls while Rafeeq becomes a gritty city griot, expounding on race, gender, memory, and longing while still keeping a sense of good-natured bawdy humor. But the hell with the influences. R.A. Washington and The Family Dollar isn’t just jazz, soul, punk, or rock. It’s Cleveland.
